SEND

Southwark Music believe that music is for all, and that high quality musical education should be accessible and inclusive.

Primary Curriculum Music

As part of our Curriculum Partnership Programme, Southwark Music offers bespoke curriculum programmes for SEND schools in the borough. Our tutors work closely with schools to tailor content to the needs of their students, and deliver accessible, multi-sensory lessons that give children with SEND the opportunity to thrive in their music lessons. Inclusivity is a core value of Southwark Music. Tutors delivering our Curriculum Partnership Programme in mainstream schools are trained to adapt all lessons to ensure they are accessible for SEND pupils learning in mainstream settings.

Primary SEND Sessions

As part of the Curriculum Partnership Programme, Southwark Music tutors facilitate small group SEND music sessions in primary schools across the borough. These bespoke curriculum programmes provide opportunities for children who may be facing barriers accessing music in the mainstream classroom to thrive in specialist sessions. Our tutors work closely with schools to tailor content to the strengths and interests of the children. During these sessions, the children will engage with music in a multi-sensory, playful environment, engaging with singing, movement, and instrument playing.

Nurture Groups

Our SEND music provision also includes Musical Nurture Groups, facilitated by specialist tutors. Musical Nurture Groups use music to help young people build positive connections with adults and peers, explore and take risks in music-making, and develop a sense of belonging and self-esteem. Tutors collaborate closely with schools to create a flexible, learning environment that follows the children’s lead. Sessions may include instrumental work, music technology, collaborative games, or singing.

Whole Class Instrumental Tuition

Southwark Music also designs bespoke whole class instrumental teaching for KS1-KS4 in SEND settings. We offer a wide range of fun and accessible musical lessons that can be adapted by our expert tutors to suit the needs of your children and school. African Drumming, Music Technology and Guitar sessions have all been popular in Southwark’s special schools.
