Southwark Music are delighted to have been put forward for a Tesco Community Grant to provide Musical Nurture Groups in primary schools for vulnerable children with mental health, behavioural or confidence difficulties.
Southwark Music provides specialist music tutors to 53 schools in the borough. We deliver curriculum music lessons and whole class instrumental tuition ensuring that every child can access high quality musical learning as well as the opportunity to perform in front of peers and parents. We offer bespoke music lessons for children with additional needs in Southwark, working with Special Schools and providing support and CPD to primary schools for their SEND children. As part of this work we facilitate Musical Nurture Groups for vulnerable children in Key Stage 2.
Musical Nurture Groups help young people who have been identified by schools as being vulnerable and at risk of poor outcomes due to mental health, behaviour or general confidence difficulties. These small groups are facilitated by experienced music tutors but are child-led in their nature with activities ranging from copycat games, playing instruments, recording music and composition. Using these musical activities as a focus, children are able to work with peers, experiment, express ideas and make choices. This enables children to build their resilience and agency and develop a sense of belonging in a calm and nurturing environment.
