Congratulations to everyone who made the Saturday Centre Spring concert such a special occasion. It was a fitting end to the term. Film maker Claudia Lee documents the work of the Southwark Music Service & Excellence in Southwark featuring The David Idowu Choir and the Southwark Youth Orchestra and the thoughts of the key players that make these vital organisations tick. ![]() The original Southwark Saturday Music Centre was opened in November 1999 and since then young people from Southwark have been able to experience playing music with a huge variety of highly qualified musicians and teachers, achieving successes in grade exams and taking part in many prestigious musical events in London and Europe. The success of this work is evident in the progress of the pupils and the enjoyment of all involved, including pupils, parents/carers and staff. Despite recent funding cuts the Music Service is committed to maintaining a quality music centre for school children in Southwark The Saturday Music Centre aims to provide all pupils with a broadly based music education that serves both to enhance their enjoyment and appreciation of music and to engender a greater understanding of music making in a variety of contexts. The centre has three main levels providing progression from introductory lessons in schools as part of Southwark Music Service’s Wider Opportunities Programme (Access Level 1). ![]() Southwark Youth Orchestra (Access Level 4)The Southwark Youth Orchestra is a performing group for young musicians of grade 5 and above. Led by Conductor Ben Gernon musicians take part in two sessions, an advanced world music ensemble and the orchestra itself starting at 1:00pm and finishing at 4:00pm. Recent performances include the concerts at the Royal Festival Hall, including collaborations with the London Philharmonia and Charles Hazelwood. Members of the Youth Orchestra must live or attend school in the Borough of Southwark
