Grand Union Orchestra Fortieth Anniversary Show

On Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May, Grand Union Orchestra are thrilled to be performing their fortieth anniversary show. This performance will feature the orchestra’s much-loved star performers – extraordinary singers and musicians from every major global musical tradition.

They are delighted to be performing at the Hackney Empire, as their shows have often begun or finished their national tours in this venue. A large number of Grand Union’s performers are first-generation migrants, and have personal experience of the events portrayed in their classic show. Their acts contribute to a wealth of musical genres: Chinese and Bengali folksong, Indian ragas, South African township music, West African drumming and chant, samba and salsa, as well as soca, ska, and jazz improvisation.
