An excellent opportunity for talented students to engage with a famous university department.
The free summer school is open to anyone living in the London Boroughs and is particularly aimed at those who have no family history of attending university or for those still undecided about whether it is for them. 30 young people will be selected to participate and will experience teaching from professional musicians and academics, as well as the opportunity to work alongside Goldsmiths undergraduate music students.
Each session will work towards a final performance chosen from three main areas:
- Chamber/Early/Traditional Music
- Rock/Pop/Urban Music
This fully funded opportunity will provide a week of creative music making, developing skills as a performer, songwriter or composer. Intensive group practical sessions will be supported by daily sessions in music theory, aural and sightreading, as well as sessions introducing creative digital music, gamelan, film and TV music, and a taste of university-style lectures.
Participants need to:
• Be 16-24 years old

Film maker Claudia Lee documents the work of the Southwark Music Service & Excellence in Southwark featuring The David Idowu Choir and the Southwark Youth Orchestra and the thoughts of the key players that make these vital organisations tick.
The original Southwark Saturday Music Centre was opened in November 1999 and since then young people from Southwark have been able to experience playing music with a huge variety of highly qualified musicians and teachers, achieving successes in grade exams and taking part in many prestigious musical events in London and Europe. The success of this work is evident in the progress of the pupils and the enjoyment of all involved, including pupils, parents/carers and staff. Despite recent funding cuts the Music Service is committed to maintaining a quality music centre for school children in Southwark
The Saturday Music Centre aims to provide all pupils with a broadly based music education that serves both to enhance their enjoyment and appreciation of music and to engender a greater understanding of music making in a variety of contexts.
The centre has three main levels providing progression from introductory lessons in schools as part of Southwark Music Service’s Wider Opportunities Programme (Access Level 1).
Southwark Youth Orchestra (Access Level 4)The Southwark Youth Orchestra is a performing group for young musicians of grade 5 and above. Led by Conductor Ben Gernon musicians take part in two sessions, an advanced world music ensemble and the orchestra itself starting at 1:00pm and finishing at 4:00pm. Recent performances include the concerts at the Royal Festival Hall, including collaborations with the London Philharmonia and Charles Hazelwood.
Members of the Youth Orchestra must live or attend school in the Borough of Southwark
