Richard founded The Islington Music Centre in 1992 and every Saturday the children come to sing and to take part in general musicianship classes and percussion sessions. At the start of the day they are young and by the late afternoon it is young adults that walk through the door. Richard knows all there is to know about children and young people’s singing and teaches vocal health, posture and technique throughout the classes. He is endlessly enthusiastic about the sound the young people make and you can see them grow in confidence and self esteem throughout the classes.
We are delighted that he is now in Southwark running classes on Sundays at the Southbank university near the Elephant and Castle. And when I visited just 4 weeks after the centre opened the children were already making a truly beautiful sound.
This centre is a fantastic addition to the musical life of Southwark and if you are interested in knowing more about the new provision do call the Centre on 0788-940-0270. There is a friendly audition and a small charge of £3 per session.
